Day 147

Fresh Start_147: A swift right boot out the door
With the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last night, the Kansas City Chiefs find themselves at a cross road after a close loss. This is the 2nd season in a row where Kansas City has made the Divisional Round thanks to a 1st round bye, and their 2nd consecutive loss following that bye. The talent in KC is no question some of the best in the league with their track record and success as of late, but you have to bring up the question; do you move on?

Alex Smith is a great quarterback in the scheme that Andy Reid runs and for a game manager, arguably the best in the league at that. But, if you are Kansas City, do you continue to put up with the mediocre numbers that Smith puts up? Reid has had QB’s like Smith in the past and won with them, but never the big one. The Super Bowl is something that has eluded Reid his entire coaching career and is the only thing missing from a Hall of Fame career. Andy Reid is not Jeff Fisher; Reid is a really good NFL coach.

The defense has play makers all over the place and will continue to do fine, if they keep upgrading or replacing players through the draft and free agency. Kansas City had the number one defense in the NFL, leading in Takeaways and being as stout as ever. If you don’t believe that, well just look at the box score last night and take a minute to soak in the fact that the Steelers didn’t reach the endzone last night and won the game. Chris Boswell is the reason why Pittsburgh is going to Foxborough instead of Reid’s Chiefs.

The offense has talent that will do incredible things just with the play makers that can take the ball to the house on any given play. It seems so old by now but, Jaamal Charles is coming back next season, and that combination of Hill and Charles will be a nightmare for opposing defenses. Smith is the only interchangeable piece in that system, and looking for an option would be in the best interest in Kansas City. An Option QB would be an interesting mix up for the scheme and give the Jet Sweep to Hill or the Read Option to Charles that more dangerous. I don’t have anyone in mind for the job, but Smith has become old news again like he did in San Francisco. Unfortunate for Smith, but there will be a job for him as a suitable back up or potential starter. The winds of change are rolling into Kansas City, so be prepared KC!
