Day 159

Fresh Start_159: Who even cares anymore?
The status quo around All-Star games are that they don’t matter or mean anything. In the NBA’s All-Star game over 300 points between the 2 teams. In the NBA, there is no defense being played and nobody really cares what happens in the game. The NBA is really just about dunks and the 3-point shot and that is what is presented in the game. Very few NBA fans actually care about defense, and that is represented by the following question. That question is: Do you know the Defensive Player of the Year from 2012?

That question can be asked and you just insert a year to see if you know. Those few people care about defense in the NBA. Moving to the MLB, which was the only game that mattered because of home field advantage in the Fall Classic. With the new CBA home field advantage rule disappeared and the game is just for the spectacle of the game. The All-Star game in Major League Baseball is the only game that can actually seem like the actual game you will watch during the regular season. You still have to get outs in baseball, the game wouldn’t end if the players didn’t play the game.

When in the NHL’s regular season is the score 8-7? The answer is almost never, there is a slim chance that one night the goalies might have a bad night, or the goal expands 3 feet. The goalies don’t really care, and shouldn’t even show up to the game.

What the leagues should do, is just have the skill challenges that the fans love. What the NBA should have is the slam dunk competition, the 3-point shoot-out, and the skills challenge that the fans love and that is it. There should still be an “All-Star” team that the fans, players, and coaches vote on, but there shouldn’t be a game. The same thing goes for the NHL, with their skills competition.

With the NFL, there should be nothing. The Pro Bowl doesn’t mean anything and is putting players in danger with the extra hits that all of the players are taking. The Pro Bowl is the most useless game that has ever been conceived. The problems with the NFL have well-documented on this blog and every other sports site. If the NFL wants to do anything, they should promote their video game “Madden” more and have a Million-dollar tournament for the top players have promote it with a “Pro-Am” between the best of the best gamers and the actual players.  That would solve some problems and be interesting.

Call this bias, but I would do nothing to the All-Star festivities that the MLB has done over the years because there really isn’t anything you can do, because of the way the game is set up. I like what the Home-run Derby has done to change, and look forward to the MLB All-Star game. There is an undoubtable problem with the level of play that the All-Star games have in the major sports league. There needs to be a change to the All-Star games and getting rid of them all together.
