NY 500 VIII

NY 500 #18
Playoff weekend here in New York, and as the sun fell on a bitter New York crowd Sunday afternoon, the Giants received a rude boot out of the NFL Playoffs via the Green Bay Packers. I won’t talk much Jets or either of the baseball teams in this rendition solely because the Knicks, Rangers, and Giants are driving the New York papers at the moment and that is all that sells. I wouldn’t be a true New Yorker if I didn’t give my 2 cents on the teams (even if I am not a fan of 2 of them).

Let me start in Green Bay, where the Giants season ended with a 38-13 loss to the Cheese Heads in the packing district of Wisconsin. The Giants just didn’t look like the team that won game after game in the regular season. Eli couldn’t channel the past Manning that would catch fire come playoff time in an opposing teams building. Eli was 2-0 in Green Bay in his career in the playoffs but couldn’t continue to be perfect. The New York Pass Defense wasn’t at all a factor for Aaron Rodgers—who just went through the New York defense like Swiss cheese. Rodgers had all types of time in the pocket—especially on crucial 3 and longs. The receivers just confused the Giant secondary and allowed their MVP quarterback to do the rest. In the end, the Giants shouldn’t hang their heads for long with the success that they had this season, and the strides they made.

Moving on to the Garden where the Rangers had Columbus their second loss in a row after the Blue Jackets rattled off 16 straight. You can’t win every night on the ice, and Saturday night the Rangers out played Columbus right up until the final buzzer. Michael Grabner scored the game winning goal with a top self-backhanded goal past Blue Jacket goalie Curtis Mcelhinney with 16 seconds to go in the game. The goal was Grabner’s second on the game with Adam Clendening (2) and Oscar Lindberg (1) also chipping in with goals. The Rangers continue their hot play and stay Top 10 in Goals per Game (2nd), Goals against (9th), Power Play percentage (3rd), and Penalty Killing (10th). The Rangers are still the 3rd best team in the East and look to continue to be one of the top teams in the NHL.

The Knicks at the moment are arguably the streakiest team in the NBA. The Knicks spilt a home and home with Milwaukee over the weekend, losing in the garden and getting their revenge on the road. If the Knicks want to keep pace in the East, they will look to add another piece to the puzzle before the deadline. A trade for a one-way defender would be perfect for the Knicks going forward. Hopefully next weekend will somehow be better even without football.
