Day 153

Fresh Start_153: America’s Got Talent
How do you define talent? Saying Aaron Rodgers is the most talented QB ever is a statement that is a snowball that is extremely close to the edge. There are a few quarterbacks that I could just rattle off that might have had that title in their day. My first thought is Warren Moon, my second is Randell Cunningham, and third would be Russell Wilson. All of these guys are accurate quarterbacks that can run really well. For the sake of the argument let’s throw Cam Newton in the mix as well. All of these guys can throw and run with the best of them. Also, usually these guys in this conversation don’t have the best talent around them; i.e. Aaron Rodgers.

What Rodgers can do isn’t something that is new to Green Bay either. The way that Rodgers buys time and scrambles is something that the living legend Brett Farve did when he was the signal caller for the cheese heads. Farve had a Houdini type of act scrambling around and throwing a 50+ yarder down the field for a huge play. Scrambling has been a Green Bay quarterback attribute for a long time. I don’t mean to undermine what Rodgers is doing because it is truly amazing and fun to watch, I just can’t take it anymore.

The type of season that Rodgers is having is almost identical to Russell Wilson’s season that he had last year. Did you forget that lucky miss by Blair Walsh in the freezing cold in Minnesota last year, and the unbelievable plays that Wilson was making in 2-degree weather. Wilson and the Seahawks looked like a deer in headlights last season at the start, with an awful offensive line to go along with that, and caught fire and put themselves in the same position that Rodgers has this season. Ben Roethlisberger is the same type of quarterback that Rodgers is, just a bigger frame. Big Ben can pull of the same type of plays to his incredible receiving core and make the Big Ketchup Bottle rock Pittsburgh all night long. Big Ben can do the same thing that both Rodgers and Wilson can do, and it has become his M.O. in his career.

Eli Manning won his 2 rings the same way with far worse teams and even better luck. Sure Eli had a stout defense in his first Superbowl, but you needed too when you are beating Farve in Green Bay and Brady’s undefeated Pats that year. I’m not going to lie, I have betted against Rodgers and his band of misfits the entire playoffs, but it has been fun to watch. The defense is so banged up, and the offense isn’t that much better. To put in basketball terms; Rodgers is basically playing 1 on 5 and winning at this point. If you saw my picks yesterday, you will see that I took Green Bay with the points, that’s because I believe the game will be a shoot-out, but I will take Matt Ryan and his offense against that defense. There has to be a point where the magic ends, and how fitting to have it end in the last game at the Georgia Dome. I will admit it is a fun streak and great TV but, he is not the most talented ever to have one good run, to “return to form.” Rodgers is one of the Top 3 QB’s in the league, but to place the ever changing “Most Talented quarterback” title is unfair to this years’ team that is making a good run in the postseason. For me, I would like to see this level of play expand 3-5 years for Rodgers, he has already had 2 really good years the past 2, so keep it up A-Rod I’ll be watching.
