Recruiting Wire Vol. 2

Recruiting Wire- The Baylor Bears
A lot can happen in a week in the collegiate world, and with the number one team in the country Villanova losing last week, the time came to switch teams at the top of the college basketball world. The Baylor Bears took over the rains as the top dog in the country, and it has a little of an odd stench around the selection. I am not saying that they don’t deserve it, they do—Baylor is a very good team, but they were such an over looked and underrated team at the beginning of the year it seems like the selection committee had an overreaction again and stuck them at the top.

Getting into the top 25 right now here it is:
1.      Baylor
2.      Kansas
3.      Villanova
4.      UCLA
5.      Gonzaga
6.      Kentucky
7.      Duke
8.      Creighton
9.      Florida State
10.  West Virginia
11.  North Carolina
12.  Butler
13.  Oregon
14.  Louisville
15.  Xavier
16.   Arizona
17.  Purdue
18.  Wisconsin
19.  Virginia
20.  Norte Dame
21.  St. Mary’s
22.  Cincinnati
23.  Florida
24.  Minnesota
25.  USC/Kansas State
I don’t have a much of a problem with the Top 25 as it stands right now, although it is the middle of the year and I cannot say much about USC, St. Mary’s, or Minnesota, but I am not on the committee. My Top 10 goes as follows:
1            1.      Villanova
2.      Baylor
3.     Kansas
4.      UCLA
5.      West Virginia
6.     Gonzaga
7.     Kentucky
8.      North Carolina
9.      Duke
10.  Florida State
I honestly hate putting Duke in my Top 10 because of the Grayson Allen situation. With his latest tripping incident, I think Allen should be suspended 5-10 games minimum by the ACC for his actions. There is no place for tripping in the game of basketball. Draymond Green got suspended for an NBA Finals game for his actions in last years’ playoffs. If it gets to the point of tournament time and nothing has happened, I think he should be shut down for the entire tournament. I am sick of seeing Grayson Allen act like a child on the basketball court. He isn’t in 2nd Grade anymore, he is in college and should act like it.

Getting into my underappreciated performer of the week is Texas Tech. guard Neim Stevenson. In a winning effort against West Virginia last Tuesday, Stevenson poured in 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists off the bench for Texas Tech. in an overtime win against the Mountaineers. Congratulations Neim Stevenson for getting the first edition of my underappreciated award. The best performance of the week goes to Creighton guard Maurice Watson Jr. In a home upset over Wisconsin, Watson had a double double. With 17 points, and 10 assists Watson was a huge key to the 9-point upset. Watson also had 7 steals to go along the double double. He is definitely a player I will be keeping my eye on.

The upcoming schedule is a good one. Tonight on the ESPN family of networks, Baylor has their first test as number one going on the road to face a tough West Virginia team at 7PM EST on ESPN 2. Duke faces Florida State on the road on the ACC Network at 8PM EST. Thursday on ESPN, Norte Dame goes to Miami which should be a great game to watch at 7PM EST. On Saturday there is a bunch of good games. First Minnesota travels to Penn State at Noon EST, then Duke goes on the road again—this time to Louisville, you also have Villanova going to the garden at Noon EST to face St. Johns. After those are wrapping up you have Florida State going to North Carolina and finally Xavier going to Butler. The North Carolina game is on ESPN and the Butler game is on FS1. So, for the week of January 10th that is what is going on through the recruiting wire, should be a great week of college ball.
