Day 148

Fresh Start_148: New Year, New Jets?
It has been almost a month since the end of the New York Jets season and I have had time to digest the season, and see where the Jets need to go to move forward. This is coming off the heels of rumors about the quarterback situation and a needed move on the offensive line. The Jets offseason started yesterday with resigning right guard Brian Winters for $8 Million a year for 4 years. Also former Tampa Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon has been in the rumor mill and has gained interest in Jets camp.

Looking forward to next season I would love to have a quarterback like Glennon on the team. I have been preaching for a veteran to be a good back up for Bryce Petty. I have not given up on Petty yet, and until he graduates to the degree of play that Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez were at the end of their Jet career is when I will officially give up on Bryce Petty. Once upon a time I like Geno Smith and thought the Jets were a borderline playoff team with him as the starting quarterback. Glennon is the perfect quarterback for the Jets and to mentor Petty.

The pieces that the Jets need to build through the draft and be very careful with what they do in free agency this offseason. This is not the free agent class that is as important to go after with boat loads of money, especially with the upcoming talent on the current roster that will be free agents. With Sheldon Richardson, Bilial Powell, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, and Buster Skrine all being available—getting Glennon and resigning players like Corey Lemonier, Wesley Johnson, Tanner Purdum, and Marcus Williams just as depth. This is a free agency that you back off for a year so you can focus on the draft and reapply focus for next offseason.

Not resigning Geno Smith, Bruce Carter, Antonio Allen, Ben Ijalana, and Mike Catapano is a move that needs to happen to free up cap space for future years. The youth movement on the Jets is a necessity in for the organization, so having a team that had the 12th highest amount of snaps by rookies is a good step forward for the team. Darron Lee, Jordan Jenkins, and Robby Anderson are a big part of the team moving ahead. Leonard Williams and Quincy Enunwa had an incredible sophomore seasons for the Jets. The ability to have Sheldon Richardson to drop back on some players due to the pressure that Williams can produce himself.

In the draft, the Jets need to focus on the following two positions: Cornerbacks and Offensive Line. The secondary is one of the weakest part of the defense which was once a strength. The Jets need to go Defensive back at number 6 in the upcoming draft, if they want to succeed. The Jets need to find the best available corner and draft him immediately. Moving on the rest of the draft, it gets tricky. If Deshaun Watson is available in the 2nd round, you draft him period. Watson is the best talented quarterback in the draft and the Jets will have unimaginable success with him on the team as the starting QB. If Watson is not, you draft offensive line. Nick Mangold looks like he is going to retire and you have to replace him, plus plugging holes on a horrible offensive line. The Jets also need a reliable return man who can make things happen on punt and kick returns. The Jets special teams play was nonexistent and at times just a blubbering mess.

Don’t forget that just a season ago, the Jets were a borderline playoff team with a questionable linebacking core. The 2016-17 New York Jets had bad luck with injury bug and play calling mistakes were the down fall of the 4-12 New York Jets. This team can get back to that level of play with a healthy team and a little more talent through the draft and free agency, I am not crazy about this—just sit back and watch.
