Breaking News:
The New Orleans Saints on the eve of the 2016 season have signed Drew Brees to an extension. It is a short one at that—only being one year but it is big in the wallet. The extension will guarantee the quarterback get $44.25 million over the next two seasons. Brees who will be thirty-eight before the end of the season is coming off a season where he threw thirty-two touchdowns and eleven interceptions, with a 66.3% completion percentage with a less then staller offensive cast. This season the personnel is not much better, but Brees who is a top five QB in the league is getting paid like it.
What I don’t like about this deal is Brees is getting paid too late in his career. This is a deal he should have signed when he was coming off the Superbowl win. The highest contract that Brees had up to this point was $13.5 million. He is getting $19.75 million this season but, this is a contract that seems well overdue. Aside from the constant playoff talk with Brees in his career with the Saints, his contract situation has also been a hot topic of discussion. The story of Brees’ time in New Orleans has constantly been how underpaid he has been.
This contract seems like the final NFL contract that Brees will sign, being that he is thirty-eight and the amount that it is. The contract itself is a thank you to Brees. Instead of paying for the future of a career, New Orleans is taking a step back and thanking their long time signal caller. In my opinion this a bad move by the Saints, given the state of the rest of the team. The defense still needs help, and Brees is still going to need people who can catch the balls that Brees is throwing. So, I am happy for Drew Brees for finally getting the money that the Saints have owed him for a long time. But for the organization, you have just gave Drew Brees a contract that can be compared to the money that the New York Yankees gave to Alex Rodriguez when he “retired”.
