Day 39

Fresh Start_39: My Way
As the great Frank Sinatra once said “And now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain…” Well Yankees fans that final curtain was drown last night with the win at home and the Blue Jays loss in Toronto. The Yankees are mathematically ineligible for the playoffs, and they’ve had a great run. After selling at the deadline, the Yankees went on a magical run with great play from rookies and an MVP performance from Gary Sanchez the Yankees played playoff baseball. The slow start from the bombers ultimately became the downfall of the team. Nobody saw the emergence of the team after the deadline and that is completely understandable. As a fan I was completely happy with the decision to sell and the turn out after the fact. I enjoyed the playoff hunt very much, especially since I didn’t think I would see that this year. The team is only going to get better and the young guns can use this as motivation for the years going forward. I said at the beginning of the season to everyone that reinforcements are coming from the minors, and I hit a grandslam on that prediction.
While I won’t take credit for the way Gary Sanchez has performed (even though he hit his first bomb on my birthday, and hasn’t looked back), nobody could have predicted that he would play this well. Aaron Judge unfortunately got hurt and had his debut in the majors cut short, so we will see what he really has next season. Tyler Austin seems like a great back-up first basemen and can provide needed pop off the bench. Greg Bird will be coming back from injury which will fill the whole left from the retiring Mark Texiera. The Yankees will also have to see if shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo is ready to come up, because he could be a good speed threat from the nine hole. It will be interesting to see what Brain Cashman does with Brain Mccann and Chase Headley coming off their 2016 seasons. Mccann has trade interest from Atlanta and it is almost certain that is where he will end up playing in 2017. Headley could be an interesting trade piece considering how inconsistent he is. The bullpen after being extremely strong for the majority of the season, fell off the table with the way Girardi managed it.
Speaking of Joe Girardi, I think he has kept his job safe for at least one more season. If you don’t know, I am not the fondest of him, and I think the Yankees would be better off with someone else. But with the way the team played for second half of the year you can’t hold that against him and it is worth giving him another go at the helm. The outfield for now is fine even with the injury filled play from Jacoby Ellsbury, and the disappointing 2016 from Brett Gardner. I have to thank the Yankees for the season that they have played and I see big things coming in the near future. Everything the team wanted to do worked in flying colors. Of course the exception is not making the postseason. But, for the final three games, the bombers can play spoiler and ruin the Orioles chances of making it as well.
