Day 26
Fresh Start_26: Another Elway?
After watching another
great day of college football and texting a few friends back and forth about
the 2017 NFL Draft I got to thinking about something Colin Cowherd said on his
radio show a few months back. Cowherd said if he was Clemson Quarterback
DeShawn Watson, he would not go to the Cleveland Browns assuming the Browns receive
the number one overall pick. This was also done by John Elway famously in the
1983 draft were he refused to go to Baltimore if the Colts drafted him. Cowherd
warns Watson and even urges him to do the same. In this sound bite Cowherd
compares Watson to Carolina Panthers Quarterback Cam Newton. This isn’t the
first comparison between the two, but it sure is interesting.
Thinking to myself I agree
with Cowherd about this issue with Watson. Assuming Watson doesn’t become a
JaMarcus Russel type player, you are looking at an MVP candidate a few years
down the line. Also if you look at the Cleveland Browns current state so far through
one week of the 2016 season, it is safe to say come draft day the Browns will
need a quarterback. If I am DeShawn Watson I wouldn’t want to waste my talent
for a team that will not go anywhere for the my entire rookie contract. Watson
has the ability to make a huge difference on a team and if Cleveland gets their
hands on Watson, he will do major things in their ten-year plan that they are
currently in. Watson can be a Cam Newton type of player in a system that can
carry a team in the cellar to a borderline championship team in about two or
three years. Without a doubt Watson is the best player in the entire upcoming
draft, and the Watson camp needs to start strategizing a way to play their
cards to not end up in Cleveland.
Nothing against the fans
of the Cleveland Browns, but the team will be wasting talent and it would be
exciting seeing Watson win some games just based on his sheer talent alone, but
that will be maybe three games at the most. In the long run it wouldn’t be
worth the long games where Watson wouldn’t be able to help in anyway. The Browns
are on the right track even after the RGIII injury. With his injury the Browns
can look toward the future—one without RGIII and look to better the team as a
whole. The Browns will need a quarterback in this years’ draft, and hopefully
and fortunately for Watson it won’t be him.
