Day 30
Fresh Start_30: AL Roy
As the season is winding
down and playoff races are coming into form it is an interesting race for
something other than the playoffs, that is the AL Rookie of the Year. The top
candidate is Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer who is 10-7 with a 3.03
ERA in 148.2 innings in 24 starts. Fulmer is the key to the Yoenis Cèspedes
trade to the Mets. Fulmer is one of the bright spots on a team fighting for
their playoff lives right now. He is out of all the candidates had the best
season. Next up on the list is Cleveland Indians outfielder Tyler Naquin; in
107 games Naquin is batting .300 with 14 homers, 42 RBI’s, 5 stolen bases, and
a .907 OPS. Naquin was a top prospect of the Cleveland organization and is
helping the “Windians” grab a division title. Naquin as good as he is right now
probably has the most room for improvement for any prospect in this rookie
class. Then is the talk of baseball, at least in the AL, Gary Sanchez. Sanchez
busted on the scene on August 3rd and in just 183 plate appearances
has 18 homers, 33 RBI’s, an average of .327, and a 1.109 OPS.
The big question is
whether or not the award should go to the Krankin himself Gary Sanchez. The
Yankee catcher is on absolute fire mashing balls out of every yard he goes
into. I actually saw his first professional home run, and I had no idea what
was to come for this young star. Sanchez is the definition of a “Baby Bomber”
and is single handedly keeping the Yankees in the playoff race by the thinnest
skin on their teeth. With his three run homer last night to bring the Yanks
back from the dead and lift them to a win, Sanchez is the one man wrecking crew
in the Bronx. It is abnormal and just looked down upon to give a September call
up the award for the entire year. But, here is my plea for Sanchez and I hope
Major League Baseball can consider Sanchez.
You have to at least give
it a thought due to the fact where the Yankees were on July 31st and
now. On July 31st the Yankees were an even .500 at 52-52 and seven
games back paired with being five and half back of the wild card. On top of all
of that the Yankees were on a four game losing streak ending the month. Now the
Bronx Bombers are 78-72 only four games back of the division and three and a
half back of the wild card. In the month of August and a little more than half
of September, the Yankees only lost twenty games. That alone shows the worth of
Sanchez right there. After all of the trades with a team at .500 and pretty
much staring the cellar in the face, now the team is seeing the playoff life. If
the Yankees keep up the pace and stay in the race, I would have to think that
the voters for the award would strongly consider Sanchez for the world. I want
to know your opinion in the comments of this article and on Twitter.
