NY 500 III

NY 500 #3
It is great to be back writing this series of articles. Let’s just jump right into it… The Yankees avoided a sweep in Baltimore by winning 5-2, scoring the first runs of the series on Sunday in the win. With that win the bombers are alive (for now) in the AL Wild card race. With Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge, Luis Severino, and Rob Refsnider joining the club and providing the spark for the club that sold at the deadline. Now, nobody saw this September run toward the playoffs for the Yankees on July 31st, including some Yankees. The inexperience will be the downfall of this team if they fall into the whole. The bats need to stay hot, and the left overs of the starting rotation will have to continue to throw like they have been, in order to keep the playoff hopes alive in the Bronx. On the over side of the city the New York Mets have been just riddled with injuries over this season and what they have done with all of that. With most of the infield gone to injury, on top of the best rotation in baseball missing three out of five. Somehow the Mets are still in it and fighting strong. Terry Collins in my mind is a strong candidate for manager of the year.
In the football universe of New York, it has been an interesting weekend leading up to Week One, following the last preseason game and final cuts. The Jets will have some concerns with Brandon Marshall for Week One with a hip injury. Add that with some concerns about Matt Forte and an offense who didn’t show much in the preseason, and a tough schedule the division title will be a battle. Even with Tom Brady and Rob Ninkovich being out the first four weeks of the season. The Jets defense on the other hand is nothing to worry about and will continue to make Sunday’s hard for the entire NFL. The New York Football Giants had a tough go of things on the offensive side of the ball in the preseason and that might be problematic in a wide open division following the Romo injury. The defense for me will still be the main factor on whether the Giants make the playoffs, based on how awful it was last season. The players will have to back up the money put in their hands in the offseason. The Rangers and Islanders have been quiet in news based on where we are in the offseason. The Knicks and Nets are in the same boat and with the NBA season just under two months away, hopes are high for both squads. The Knicks look to make a playoff push, while the Nets continue their rebuild. See you next Monday!
