Day 222
Fresh Start_222: All Giants fall
Ali vs Frazier/ The
Miracle on Ice/ The 1983 NC State Wolfpack/ The 2004 Red Sox/ The 2016 Chicago Cubs/
and now the 2017 Mississippi State Bulldogs. What all these iconic moments have
in common is that they are all an underdog winning against a seemingly
unbeatable opponent. What Mississippi State did last night was knock off the
heavily favored UConn Women’s team who if you didn’t know won 111 straight games.
Going into the game,
Mississippi State knew they had to play constant pressure defense to make the
Huskies uncomfortable in their offensive sets. The Bulldogs would also have to
score on the offensive end—relying on 19 points from Junior guard Victoria
Vivians and 13 points (including the game-winner) from another Junior guard Morgan
William. William is 5’5” and one of the best guards in the entire country. In the
Elite 8 matchup against the 1st seeded Baylor Lady Bears, William
scored a career high 41 points to help the Bulldogs get to the Final Four matchup
against the Huskies.
After the loss UConn head
coach Geno Auriemma said in his post-game press conference “they took us away
from the this we wanted to do… I’m proud of our team and I’m proud of our kids
they had an incredible run, but we came up against a much better team tonight.”
With those words Auriemma embodies what it is to be a gracious winner and an
even better loser. The UConn Huskies don’t lose often, but when they do, they
might still be a better team at the end of the game.
In this incredible mess
that we call sports, all giants must fall, all dynasties must come to an end. The
classic David vs. Goliath story is always a perfect storyline in sports and
thanks to the Mississippi Bulldogs we will be remembering the 2017 Women’s
Final Four as the time that the unbeatable powerhouse Connecticut Huskies fell
thanks to an Overtime game-winner from the shortest woman on the court.
