In between the Pinstripes #4

In between the Pinstripes_4: This isn’t going to last, but it’s frustrating
Well, the story of the first series of the year for the Yanks is; short-bad outings by the starters and good-long appearances from the bullpen. The Yanks tonight didn’t get any help from Michael Pineda tonight, being that he gave up a lead-off homer to Corey Dickerson just 3 pitches into the game.

Just like Masahiro Tanaka on Sunday, Pineda’s inability to get in a grove early in the ball game, doomed the starts from the very beginning. Pineda’s final line reads like this: 3.2 innings, 8 hits, 4 earned runs, and 8 strike outs. Pineda looked like he had some of his best stuff tonight, the problem was his location. If you ever watch a game and see the catcher’s glove leak back over the plate, that’s never a good sign. Well, Gary Sanchez’s glove did that a ton tonight, hence the 8 hits and 4 earned runs.

On the contrary, the Yanks ‘pen has been lights out through the first three games of 2017. The ‘pen for the Bombers has thrown 13.2 innings scoreless so far. The bullpen has pitched WAY too much for anyone’s liking—but with the scheduled off days it can be worked around. With the bullpens great start, it coincides perfectly with my Focus Player of the Day. That player today is Adam Warren who pitched great in relief, while also giving the Yankees the chance to come back throughout multiple times during the game. Warren pitched 2.1 innings, didn’t allow a hit, and stroke out 4. That’s as good of a performance you are going to see in a 4-1 loss.

However, the Yankees did have their chances and thanks to Aaron Judge and Starlin Castro, two of the Yankees rally chances were killed thanks to two double plays that were just tailor maid. The Bombers are struggling at the plate, but maybe going up North for the first time this Spring will get their bats back on track. Hopefully the Yankees can be a little more competitive in the series against the Orioles this weekend. The bullpen will need to do more of the same against the potent lineup of Baltimore. Luis Severino will need to be the first Yankee starter this season to pitch into the 6th inning (and if you ask me that’s a tall task). Severino will be taking on Ubaldo Jimenez in Baltimore on Friday. The game has a 7:05 start time, and it should be a good series to wrap your weekend up with.

But, take another off day, don’t overreact too much, there is still 159 games left in the season. What’s important for the Yankees and for the fans to think about is winning series instead of games, and winning the series in Baltimore will be a great confidence boomer going into the Home Opener on Monday.
