In between Pinstripes #10

In between the Pinstripes_10: Dust off the brooms
Once, Twice, Three times is nice. The Yankees get the sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays and that is thanks to Aaron Hicks and Luis Severino. In a low scoring 3-2 comeback win against the Rays, Severino needed to pitch well and he did just that. Severino pitched 7 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, only one walk, and 11 strike outs (a career high) on 104 pitches. Severino had a great slider to power him through those 7 innings with the 11 strike outs. Severino got his first win as a starter since September 27th 2015. It has been a LONG time since there was a “W” in next to his name as a starter and he pitched like he deserved the win. There is still room for Severino to improve, but to have a 7-inning outing and 11 strike outs is a nice second outing of the year.

Going to Aaron Hicks, he was the entire offense for the bombers tonight; hitting 2 homers (a solo shot in the first, and 2-run shot in the 7th), and having all 3 RBI’s for the Yankees tonight. For that reason, Aaron Hicks is the Focus Player of the Day. Hicks didn’t get the starting job out of Spring Training, but he is making the most of the opportunities he is getting batting .461 2 home runs, and 5 RBI’s in only 16 at-bats. The call to go with Aaron Judge as the everyday right fielder was the right choice, and the Yankees should be happy to have a player like Hicks on the bench ready to go when called upon.

With the sweep of the Rays, the Yankees move to 5-4 and move into a second-place tie with the Red Sox heading into an inter-league matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals. The matchup tomorrow is a matchup of great pitchers. Michael Wacha goes for the Cardinals; the 25-year old right hander dealt in his first start against the Reds. Wacha went 6 innings, 3 hits, one run, only one walk, and 6 strike outs. His opposition is Masahiro Tanaka; who is looking to bounce back after two rough starts to begin the season. In 2 starts Tanaka has pitched 7.2 innings, an 0-1 record, an 11.74 ERA, and only 8 strike outs. After a great series for the staff with Pineda’s near perfect 7 innings, Jordan Montgomery’s good debut, and tonight’s gem by Severino; Tanaka will look to continue the trend against a Cardinal team who is coming a rough series loss against the Nationals where St. Louis pitchers allowed 25 runs in 3 games. But, for tonight Yankee fans, you can Start spreading the news, just like Frank Sinatra once famously said. Enjoy the first series win of the year and the first sweep of the year.
