NY 500 XXXI

NY 500 #31
With this being the 2nd to last weekend in April, the New York sports spectrum starts to truly hit its stride. It is only fitting that the city of New York has a day off in the sports world. The Yankees and Mets are almost an entire month into the season, the NHL playoffs are heading into the second round, and the NFL Draft is coming up this week on with the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday night—so Jets and Giants fans have something to look forward too.

To start off, the Mets are in some deep trouble, getting swept by the Nationals over the weekend, are 5.5 games out of first, and have lost 8 out of their last 9. The Mets have no offense, which is leaning on the incredible pitching way too much too often early on this year. I get that 8-11 is extremely early in the year, but this slow start could be one of the reasons why they miss the playoffs, while also being an on-going problem for the entire year that needs fixing.

The bombers on the other hand, are streaking in the opposite direction. The Yanks have won 9 out of the last 11, and are a game and half out of first. The Yankees are going to Boston tomorrow to start a 3-game set, and if the Yanks can get 2 out of 3 or sweep this series, that start without Didi and Gary Sanchez would be unexpected and unbelievable.

On the ice, the Rangers are moving on to the second round after a brutal 6-game series that was incredible to watch. The Blueshirts are in the minority that will out hit and out goaltend you, which is something that they can really take advantage of against Ottawa. Hopefully, the Rangers can take care of business in 6 games or less—with the Penguins and Capitals having a blood bath to make the Conference Finals.

The NFL new year is almost upon us with the NFL Draft being Thursday at 8PM EST. What the Jets will do is one of the most interesting storylines to see, and well they NEED to make the right decision to start to turn this franchise around. The Giants will undoubtedly go either offensive line or running back with their first-round selection, and a Delvin Cook will do just fine.

Basketball in New York is an afterthought, while the New York basketball fans enjoy watching the playoffs from a far (wishing for the days where the Knicks or Nets make it to the playoffs). Porzingis is having a press conference about who knows what, and could spell disaster for the Knicks. Carmelo is most likely on the way out, and the Nets still wait for the disappear of giving the top selection to the Boston Celtics. But, that’s New York and that’s why he love it.
