In between the Pinstripes #15

In between the Pinstripes_15: The end of a streak, but a dogfight
What a ball game to watch. Even with the 8-game winning streak being snapped tonight with the 4-1 loss, the Yankees didn’t go quietly. The bombers had some fight in them in the bottom of the 9th bringing the winning run to the plate in Aaron Judge with the bases loaded. Sometimes you just get out pitched and that’s exactly what happened tonight. Miguel Gonzalez tonight just out pitched Luis Severino, and shut down the Yankees bats. Gonzalez left the game in the 9th after putting two runners on in the 9th. However, Gonzalez only gave up 4 hits in 8.1 innings, walking just one batter, and striking out 4. Gonzalez only had 81 pitches tonight and didn’t allow a hit into the outfield—all 4 hits were infield hits.

Luis Severino pitched well, even with giving up a 3-run homer to Avisail Garcia in the bottom of the 7th. But, the three-run homer wasn’t necessarily Severino’s fault. Severino served up a routine double play ball off the bat of Melky Cabrera, but Pete Kozma misplayed the ball and allowed both runners to reach. What the double play would have done was; clear the bases with Jose Abreu due up. Abreu stroke out both times he faced Severino up to that point and with Severino having 10 strike outs in the outing, he was pitching well, and if Severino gets Abreu out the game is a one run game heading to the bottom of the 8th. That error changed the course of the game and cost the bombers 8-game streak. I don’t like putting the blame on one guy, but Kozma is usually a sure handed fielder and that play is a ball that you have to turn and get the double play. Losing the streak isn’t the biggest thing to get upset about, and the game itself was just phenomenal baseball game. Severino’s final line was: 8 innings, 3 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), no walks, and 10 strike outs on 68 pitches, oh and the loss. The Yanks will take that outing 10/10 times because 9/10 times Kozma comes up with that ball. Great outing by Severino, the ball just didn’t roll the Yankees way tonight.

I know that the Yankees will not go on a 100-game winning streak and this will hopefully several winning streaks throughout the year. The bombers wouldn’t even have been in the game if it wasn’t for the outing by Severino. Not only did he keep the Yanks in the game, but he gave majority of the bullpen a night off (Holder pitched an inning only throwing 12 pitches). For that Severino is my Focus Player of the Day, this outing was just a dogfight against Gonzalez, and sometimes you pitch your heart out the other guy is just better. Also, the Yankees got Aaron Judge to the plate with the BASES LOADED, and he was the winning run. Judge is the guy you want at the plate right now, and you can’t get mad with the outcome of the game.

After this game, I want to watch the rubber match right now. The finale of this series should be a great one between Masahiro Tanaka and Dylan Covey. Tanaka is coming off his best start of the season, where he went 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, striking out 5, and getting his first win. The Yanks will look to take the last game of the home stand, and give Tanka a good foundation to go off for the season. Covey on the other hand is making his second career start. In his Major League Debut, Covey went 5.1 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 run, and striking out one batter getting a no decision. We will see how the Yankees fair against Covey because the bombers don’t have a good history against pitchers that they have never seen before. Let this loss serve as a shot back to earth, and just another opportunity to start a new streak. I cannot wait for the rubber match tomorrow, should be a good one.
