In between the Pinstripes #5

In between the Pinstripes_5: Early Heart Break
Well, errors will break the back of a team at any point of the season. Chase Headley had 2 key errors that accounted for the biggest blow to the Yankees which was a two-run homer over the right field wall by Seth Smith of the Orioles in the Top of the 7th. Headley had two errors—mixed in with a couple good plays, but the errors were the killer tonight in Baltimore. The jam wasn’t Tyler Clippard’s fault, but the missing in the location was and well you can’t miss that bad to a team like Baltimore.

Luis Severino had a great outing ruined with a rough end, giving up a three-run bomb into the bullpens off the bat of Manny Machado. Severino did walk Adam Jones on a couple of close pitches which should have been called strikes, but again, you can’t miss to a powerful team like Baltimore.

But, the game had a lot of positives from the rest of the team. Matt Holiday and Gary Sanchez both had two-run homers, which were both the first homer of the season for both guys. Severino looked good through 4.2 before giving up the 3-run bomb to Machado. The bullpen didn’t allow much, except for the mistake by Clippard in the 7th.

Brett Gardner had a fantastic day at the plate, going 3-5, 3 runs, and 2 stolen bases. Yes, that’s right Brett Gardner had two stolen bases in one game, crazy right?! Gardner is my Focus Player of the Day with his excellent day at the plate. I was impressed with what Severino did on the mound for the must part going; 5 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs, and 6 strike outs (1 key walk). The problems I had was that Severino gave up the long ball to Machado, and had a tough inning as far as pitch count the last two innings he was out there. The Yankee starters NEED to go deeper in ball games because the bullpen can’t save the game every time out—tonight was a prime example of that. Tonight is a tough loss early on in the year, well because the game was in the hands of the bombers for majority of the game. The Yanks didn’t shut the door and for the Orioles (who have the most home runs in the majors since 2015) anything is possible if the door is left open even in the slightest.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the Yankees need their ace. With the loss tonight, the Yankees are 1-3 through 4 games and the team just needs a lift. What a better time for Tanaka to be the ace that he has been since coming to the Bronx. Tanaka and the Yankees will be tasked to go against Oriole starter Kevin Gausman; who went 5.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks, and 4 strike outs against Toronto on Opening Day. Hopefully, Tanaka can lift the Yankees will an ace type performance tomorrow in Baltimore, they need it.
