In between the Pinstripes #17

In between the Pinstripes_17: Errors break backs
I can take a pitcher missing his spot, or a someone missing a pitch, because stuff like that can happen because not even swing is going to result in a hit, and not every pitch will find the back of the catcher’s glove. The thing that I cannot stand is errors that extend innings and give all the momentum to the other team. That is what happen tonight in Pittsburgh in the Bottom of the 7th inning. Starlin Castro dropped a routine fly ball that he should have been called off by Judge, the error forced in a run and ended up giving the Pirates two extra runs, making the game 6-3 going to the top of the 8th. I turned the game off after the bottom of the 7th because I knew that it would take a miracle for the Yankees to come back from that.

To be fair, the game was never in control by the bombers, but up until that point the Yankees were sticking around and as the ball was popped into the air, it seemed like the Yanks would break through before the end of the game. That thought quickly evaporated when Starlin dropped the ball and allowed Jordy Mercer to score. Eventually McCutchen would score on a single by David Freese making the score 6-3.

C.C. didn’t pitch all that well in the first 2 innings, but pitched well enough to keep the Yankees in the game, keeping it a one run game until he left in the 5th. I think Sabathia should have at least pitched through the 6th if not the 7th with only 77 pitches through 5, even with his spot up 2nd in the top of the 6th. Sabathia’s final line was: 5 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strike outs. Sabathia might be the only pitcher who can hit on the Yankees so why not give him one more at-bat with the way Chris Carter is playing right now?  Adam Warren also pitched well until the error going: 1.2 innings, no hits, 2 runs, one walk, and 3 strike outs. Warren shouldn’t be on the hook for those 2 runs, but nevertheless he is.

Focusing on the positive, my Focus Player of the Day played well at least. That player is Jacoby Ellsbury; who went 3-4, a run scored, and 2 stolen bases. Ellsbury is the only bright spot in this loss tonight, and it is a shame that the Yankees lost like this because the way the team was playing—and has been playing, something seemed like it was going to roll the Yankees way.

All you can do now is focus on the game tomorrow and sleep off the tough loss tonight. Tomorrow, the ace of the staff so far in 2017, Michael Pineda is on the bump tomorrow against Jameson Taillon. Taillon so far is 1-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 20 innings (3 starts). Taillon is coming off a 7-inning, one run, 6 strike out gem of a win in Chicago. Pineda is coming off a 7-inning, 2 run, 6 strike out win against the Cardinals. Hopefully Pineda can pitch well and into the 6th or later—setting up a rubber match on Sunday afternoon. No Yankee win, but being in the game for 6.2 innings is a plus, and the mistakes are fixable. Looking forward to watch Big Mike pitch tomorrow.
