NY 500 XXVIII
NY 500 #28
Opening Day is here! The
NBA season will be ending in less than a month—meaning NBA playoffs will be
here sooner than you know it. And, the NHL season has 3 games left. The Rangers
just clinched their playoff spot last night with a 4-1 win of the Flyers. This the
3rd straight season where they have scored 100 points in a season. The
Islanders haven’t been mathematically eliminated just yet, but the nail in the coffin
was shutting down John Taveras for the season early last week. The Islanders with
3 games left have 86 points—which is a good season but not enough to make the
playoffs in a stacked Eastern Conference.
The Knicks and Nets have
mailed it in a long time ago, but the NBA season powers on toward the playoffs
and the Knicks hope for a top 10 pick to turn their franchise around, while the
Nets can look forward to trying to barely win 20 games again. Neither team is
going to land popular free agents this summer, so they have to dive deep and
find valuable talent in the upcoming draft.
The Jets and Giants are
finalizing their draft boards, reviewing pro days and the combine, and working
out players they have their eyes on. The Jets have been interested in former
Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which is interesting—but the Jets have
an outside chance of getting Mahomes even if they try and use their 2nd
round pick on him. The Giants have been in the news because head coach Ben
McAdoo who said last week that “Geno Smith could secede Eli Manning as the
Giants quarterback.” You can take that for what it is.
Finally, Opening Day is
upon us. The Yankees came slow out of the gate with a 7-3 loss to the Rays. The
bullpen did pitch well not allowing a run in 7.1 innings of relief and Starlin
Castro went 3-4. The Mets are currently leading the Braves 1-0 in the bottom of
the 7th when I am writing this. Noah Syndegaard in his Opening Day
start went 6 innings, he gave up 5 hits, stroke out 7, walking zero, and not
giving up no runs, on 86 pitches. If you are Mets fan, you have to be happy
with that outing by Thor. But, this is just the beginning of a great spring to
be a New York sports fan.
