In between the Pinstripes #8
In between the
Pinstripes_8: ALMOST perfect
What a way to start off a
Home Opener! Every facet of the game was dominated by the Yankees today and
that shows in the 8-1 thrashing of the Tampa Bay Rays. Michael Pineda got his
revenge against the Rays in a big way, going deep into the game with a perfect
game in hand. Pineda threw 6.2 innings perfect until Evan Longoria drilled a
double into the left field corner. The game that Pineda was pitching had the aura
around it that perfection might happen.
The play before Longoria’s
double, Kevin Kiermaier hit a slicing line drive to left that Gardner ran down,
and that look to be that “signature out” that everyone talks about when a
perfect game happens. Not taking anything away from Pineda at all today, he did
everything asked of him and more. Also, Austin Romine showed that he might want
to ask Joe Girardi and the Yankees if he could be Pineda’s personal catcher.
Romine was excellent behind the plate today and showcased his defensive ability
and why the Yankees love him so much.
Both Romine and Pineda
showed signs of potential today and that isn’t something to take lightly. Even with
it being Pineda’s second start, this could be something to build off of to
become the pitcher that he stuff shows him to be. With this great performance,
there is no question that Michael Pineda is my Focus Player of the Day with the
7.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 earned run, and 11 strike outs on only 93 pitches
against the Rays this afternoon.
However, it wasn’t only
Pineda that got the Bronx rocking today, the bats came alive against Alex Cobb
and the Rays bullpen. Cobb pitched well until the 8th where he
suffered a bitter end to a great day on the mound. Cobb’s final line reads: 7.1
innings pitched, 6 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), a walk, and 7 strike outs. Cobb’s
outing took a turn for the worst when second baseman Brad Miller botched a
routine ground ball with one out in the 8th. From then on the
Yankees open the flood gates and put up a 5 spot in the 8th. Holiday
hit a double, Chris Carter hit a triple (yes you are reading that right a
triple), Starlin Castro hit a 2-run homer, and Torreyes got an RBI on a fielders’
choice.
Looking ahead to
Wednesday’s ball game, which is another matinee at the Stadium which features
Blake Snell and Luis Severino. Severino pitched well in his first start until
the 3-run bomb that Manny Machado hit off him in the 5th inning of
that outing. Severino looks to bounce back against a lineup that got shut down
this afternoon at the hands of the bombers. For Blake Snell, he had a rough
first outing going 6.2 innings, allowing 3 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 5 walks,
and 5 strike outs on 97 pitches. The bombers look to keep their bats hot
against Snell who struggled his way out of the gate. You can as Frank Sinatra
once famously said “Start spreading the news” Yankee fans, the Yanks are now
3-4 and looking to get back to .500.
