In between the Pinstripes #7

In between the Pinstripes_7: Building up confidence
What a nice way to end a 6-game road trip for the Yankees. On the heels of losing Gary Sanchez, the bombers get a come from behind win thanks to 7 unanswered runs off the Baltimore bullpen. The Oriole pen didn’t give up a run all season until today. C.C. Sabathia had a very nice outing, going 6 innings, giving up 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), and 3 strike outs. Sabathia pitched like he deserved the win going 6 on 97 pitches, but if there is any unsung hero of the day today, it is C.C. The way Sabathia pitched, it allowed the Yankees to stay in the game and not get down in a hole.

I liked the way Sabathia pitched without his best stuff and I like the way the Yankees played from the 5th inning on. It took a while for the bats to wake up, but when they did, boy did they. Aaron Judge hit a laser off the left field wall that only allowed him to hit a single because of how hard he hit it. With his next at-bat, Judge hit a homer about 4 rows deep in left field to tie up the ball game. Starlin Castro who has had a good start to 2017, drove in the go-ahead run in the 9th with a single. That single has to give Castro some confidence given that he finally delivered in a big spot.

With all of that, none of those guys are my Focus Player of the Day, that belongs to Ronald “Speedy Gonzalez” Torreyes. Torreyes gave the Yanks a lift, knocking in the Yankees first two runs with a bases clearing triple in the 6th. Torreyes is currently leading the bombers in RBI’s and had 3 hits in today’s ball game, going 3-5 with those 2 RBI’s.

This game was a great confidence booster for the entire ball club. From Sabathia giving a great outing, to Torreyes coming up clutch, and Judge and Castro getting big hits for themselves. This game highlighted a decent series in Baltimore that just didn’t roll their way. The way the Yankees ran the bases throughout the series, pitched out of the bullpen (for the most part), and decent hitting. Today’s game hopefully can start a great home stand starting tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Rays. With the club beat up early and not playing well up to this point, today the Yankees can exhale a bit and focus on a big home stand to turn their season around. Nobody wants to start 2-4, but that’s better than 1-5, and it’s better for the whole team to play well in a “get away game” before they head into their Home Opener.

In the Home Opener tomorrow, Michael Pineda looks to bounce back against the team that jumped all over him in his first start. The Rays coming off a 2-1 series win against the Yankees in the first series of the year, Tampa Bay has jumped out to a 5-2 start in 2017, and the Yankees hope to get off on the right foot at home tomorrow. The Yankees face the pitcher that beat Pineda in Tampa—Alex Cobb who went 5.2 innings in the winning effort. Pineda and the bombers will look for some early revenge against the Rays. I am looking forward to the Home Opener and am hopefully optimistic that Pineda will bounce back in his second start. Yankee fans have to feel better about the team after the win today, and should look forward to a good day tomorrow in the Bronx. The Bombers get to sleep in their own beds tonight coming off a win, and that is always good. It’s always a good day when the Yankees win, and today is no different, take the win and look ahead to a 9-game home stand. As Frank Sinatra once said “start spreading the news.”
