In between the Pinstripes #6

In between the Pinstripes_6: Gut punch
This is as bad of a loss that you can have. Not only did Dellin Betances blows the gap between him and Chapman in the bottom of the 7th, not only does Tanaka have yet another bad outing, but the Yankees lose Gary Sanchez to a right biceps injury when he fouled off a ball in the 5th.

The Yankees can hold their breath about Sanchez, but the bombers need to fix the rotation. Tanaka is the ace of the staff and can barely go 5 innings on 92 pitches (36 pitches in the 5th). The bullpen seems exhausted in the backend; being Clippard, Betances, and Chapman. Warren and Holder look unhittable at the moment and I don’t know why Girardi isn’t relying on them more than he is. Warren and Holder combined to go 2.1 innings, only one hit, and 2 strike outs. The Yankees need to get some length from Sabathia tomorrow and Pineda on Monday in the Home Opener. Tanaka didn’t have his normal command again today, and maybe the elbow is bothering him just a little. Tanaka hit 96 and 97 late in his outing, but he was throwing and not pitching. Tanaka didn’t use that velocity to his advantage and the Orioles took advantage.

Gary Sanchez on the other hand, is going on the DL. Most likely the 10-day disabled list and will call up Kyle Higashioka to be the back-up catcher behind Austin Romine. This is not what the Yankees want to hear and hopefully Sanchez can sit down and recover quickly. Higashioka in Spring Training batted .296, 2 homers, 3 RBI’s, and an .630 Slugging Percentage. This is a huge blow to a Yankee lineup that is struggling out of the gate in 2017. Greg Bird is already down with an ankle injury that he suffered in Spring Training, and hopefully can be ready for the Home Opener on Monday.

Getting to the game, it was everything you wanted until the 7th when Betances has a nightmare appearance out of the pen. The Focus Player of the Day is Ronald “Speedy Gonzalez” Torreyes who went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and the Yankees wouldn’t have been in this ball game if it wasn’t for Torreyes. But, in a day that you lose yet another tough game where your ace doesn’t pitch well, and when you lose your best player on your team it has to be worrisome day. Not only that but the Yankees are 1-4 in 2017 and are in the position of getting swept by a division rival.

Looking ahead to the series finale tomorrow, Wade Miley makes his season debut against C.C. Sabathia who has the sole win in the Yankee rotation. Hopefully C.C. can be the ace that he once was and deliver a needed long outing for the Yanks. If not, well at least you’ll sleep in your own bed tomorrow night…
