In between the Pinstripes #21

In between the Pinstripes_21: Tanaka Time in Boston
I don’t think this win for the Yankees has sunk in with me yet. I don’t mean that with the significance of the win, but on the night that it came on. With the NBA and NHL playoffs on, a compelling and exciting Ranger game, and the NFL draft—a late April baseball game was the last thing on my mind. However, I did watch 95% of this game, and what I say was a game that look liked it was played in mid-June.

Masahiro Tanaka was absolutely masterful. Tanaka looked like the Cy Young candidate that he has been since coming to New York in 2014. Tanaka threw a 3-hit shutout tonight in Boston. He out dueled Chris Sale, which has been impossible so far in 2017, Tanaka secures a 2-game sweep of the Red Sox, and gives the entire Yankee bullpen a night off (which is desperately needed). Because of this Tanaka is the Focus Player of the Day with a final line of: 9 innings, 3 hits, no walks, and 3 strike outs.

Matt Holiday and Starlin Castro accounted for the offense, with Holiday easing his way out of a mini slump. Holiday went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s, while Castro went 2-4 with a sole RBI. Ronald “Speed Gonzalez” Torreyes did go 2-2 off of Chris Sale which is an accomplishment in itself.

The Yankees head into the weekend for a “battle of 1st place” in late April against Baltimore. Kevin Gausman goes for the Orioles. Gausman is 1-2 in 5 starts with a 7.50 ERA, while coming off a 5.1 inning performance, giving up 8 hits, 5 runs, walking 3, and striking out 4. Gausman is 6-3 with a 2.24 ERA, and a .235 average against in 18 games (12 starts) against the bombers. His opposition is C.C. Sabathia who is coming off his worst start of the year in Pittsburg. Sabathia went 5 innings, giving up 7 hits, 4 runs, walked 2, and stroke out 3.

Hopefully Sabathia can bounce back and deliver yet another great performance tomorrow night. But, for tonight, the Yankees won so you can “Start spreading the news” because the Yanks won again! Get a short broom out for the Red Sox, and prepare for a tough weekend series at The Stadium, so be fun!
