In between the Pinstripes #9
In between the
Pinstripes_9: Resetting the season
Back to .500, the first
series win of the year, Chapman’s first save of the year, and a very nice
comeback win. However, the Yankees lose yet another big piece of the ball club
thanks to a collision between Rickie Weeks Jr. and Brett Gardner in the 6th
inning. Both players exited the game, Gardner having a bruised jaw and a neck
strain. If you saw the collision, the only way to describe it is a football hit
without pads on. Hopefully both players will be okay soon and this collision doesn’t
hold either player off the field for an extended period of time.
Jordan Montgomery made
his Major League Debut on the mound today and pitched well. He pitched like he
deserved the win, he just got out pitched by Blake Snell. Montgomery’s final line
is: 4.2 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), 2 walks, and 7 strike outs on 89
pitches. Montgomery had a good change-up and slider, with a decent fastball. Montgomery
also had 17 swings and misses on those 89 pitches. I thought Montgomery should
have went 5 innings to be the pitcher of record to get his first Major League
Win. That might come in his next start, but with this start today, the Yankees
might have found their 5th starter.
The offense came alive in
the bottom of the 5th, although it didn’t seem like it at first. The
bombers loaded the bases with no outs in the 5th and almost didn’t
score, but 2 runs thanks to a walk and a wild pitch. However, the offense was
lifted thanks to a 2-run bomb by Aaron Judge that was a mammoth shot into Monument
Park. Judge added the tying RBI on a single in the 6th and is the
Focus Player of the Day today for the Yankees. With this homer it’s Judge’s 3rd
homer of the season and 3rd in as many games. Aaron Judge has proven
early that Joe Girardi made the right choice naming him the starting right fielder.
Starting 2017 the way he is, Judge is showing that he belongs in the Major
Leagues and still has room to grow. Judge’s swing has shortened and the results
have shown, the lineup needs it and Judge will only get better when Didi and
Gary Sanchez get back in the order.
This win is also the 3rd
win in a row, and most importantly brings the Yankees back to .500. The season
starts all over again after this win, and hopefully the Yanks can sweep the
series tomorrow which will be a great way to bounce back after a bad start in
Tampa and Baltimore. The ball is rolling in the right direction and hopefully
that will continue tomorrow.
Tomorrow night Severino
finally gets his second start of the season. With Montgomery’s debut, everyone
in the rotation gets an extra day of rest, so Luis Severino will look to bounce
back and go longer than 5 innings against Matt Andriese for Tampa Bay. Andriese
went only 4 innings in his first start of the year; giving up 7 hits, 5 runs (4
earned), only one walk, and 4 strike outs on 85 pitches against the Blue Jays. The
Rays battled back against Toronto, so Andriese got a no decision. Greg Bird is
most likely going to start tomorrow after missing the last two games with an
ankle injury and the flu. But, Yankee fans you can as Frank Sinatra famously
said “Start spreading the news” after yet another Yankee win.
