Day 239

Fresh Start_239: Starling Marte suspended for PED’s
PED’s are still tainting the game of baseball. Some breaking news today as I left class, Pittsburgh Pirates Centerfielder Starling Marte is suspended 80 games for using the banned substance Nandrolone.

The drug is an anabolic steroid that increases muscle structure, increases testosterone, and increases your red blood count. The side effects on the other hand are extremely dangerous, calling for its discontinuation. Nandrolone may cause liver tumors or bloody cysts in the liver and spleen. It also can cause bladder infections, the lack to get an erection and fertility problems.

Marte apologized to the Pirates organization and his teammates, but the hole that Marte leaves is not easy to patch. Last season Marte had an All-Star season that got Pirate fans exciting for the prime of Marte’s career.

Last year, Marte batted .311 with 9 homers, 46 RBI’s, 47 stolen bases (only getting caught 12 times), and scoring 71 runs in 153 games. In 2015, Marte batted .287, with 19 homers, 81 RBI’s (both career highs), 30 stolen bases (only being caught 10 times), and scoring 84 runs.

Pittsburgh thought they had a building block in the 28-year old outfielder, but the plans will take a massive hit with Marte missing half the season thanks to the suspension. There is no publicized time table for how long Marte was taking this drug, but this will be a big blemish on a good career. Marte must prove himself clean once he gets back, so let’s how that goes.
